What is Club Dramaturgie?

Club Dramaturgie is an informal lecture and discussion series for theatre lovers to explore great plays through lectures, discussion and active analysis.

How a Typical Evening Works:
We meet once a month to discuss a play that has been announced in advance. Participants are expected to read the play beforehand (but if you don't, I won't tell anyone... 🤫).

After everyone has grabbed some tea and cookies and settled in, we begin with a short lecture exploring the historical context and main themes of the play.

Following the lecture, we move into a group discussion, where we share our opinions, ask questions, and reflect on both the text and the ideas presented in the lecture.

We close the evening with an active analysis of a scene from the play. Two participants read the scene aloud, and everyone joins in exploring key questions about the text: What are the given circumstances of the scene? What do the characters want from each other? Why did the playwright include this scene in the play?

This event is held in English. Participation is free, with a suggested donation of €10. Everyone is welcome. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where theatre professionals and theatre lovers can meet, exchange ideas, and build a community around great plays.

Who’s doing this?

Hi! My name is Kay, nice to meet you.

I’m an actress and director based in Berlin. I love improv, the classics and analysing text. I have a Russian/American background, and you can learn more about that on my website.

My “Why?”
Why am I hosting Club Dramaturgie? Because I love it! I love reading and researching the plays. Theater history is a great passion of mine. And I love sharing my findings and discussing them with everyone who comes to the meetings. I’ve been able to connect to so many kind and insightful people through this process.

Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen

Hedda Gabler follows the intelligent but deeply dissatisfied Hedda, who feels trapped by the expectations of marriage and society and seeks to exert control over the lives of those around her. Through psychological tension and moral ambiguity, the play explores themes of freedom, power, repression, and the consequences of manipulating others.

  • Woyzeck

    Georg Büchner

    This play follows the impoverished soldier Franz Woyzeck, who is exploited by those in power and gradually descends into paranoia and despair. As poverty, humiliation, and jealousy overwhelm him, the play becomes a powerful critique of social inequality and the devastating effects of oppression on the human mind.

    (But I won’t tell anyone if you didn’t get around to reading it this time. 😉)

  • Most of our plays can be found as pdfs with a quick Google search, but if you’re having problems finding a copy, please reach out! We’ll send you a copy.

  • The event will be hosted in English, but we welcome all languages and language levels to participate!
